WEG receives abatement on $5M in new equipment

BLUFFTON, Ind. – Members of the Bluffton Common Council met in special session Tuesday afternoon and approved a tax abatement for WEG Commercial Motors.

The facility at 410 E. Spring St. is the former Bluffton Motor Works. WEG purchased it in 2016.

WEG submitted a statement of benefits on more than $5.4 million in new equipment. The new equipment, according to the statement, will be installed before Dec. 31.

The abatement will be in place on a sliding scale for 10 years.

A spokesman for the company said the new equipment is necessary because the majority of the equipment in the building is more than 50 years old. The upgrade this year is part of a three-year plan to replace and update its equipment.

The council also approved three tax abatement compliance forms for WEG on equipment from 2012, 2014, and 2015.
